DEWALT Racing’s Scott Pye scored his best result of the season to date with a sixth-place finish in Race 18, while IRWIN Racing’s Mark Winterbottom scored two top ten finishes on the final day of racing at the WD-40 Townsville SuperSprint.

The overall qualifying times were slower on Sunday throughout the field, as the team continued to search for ultimate one-lap performance around the Reid Park Street Circuit. Pye would start 11th and 15th for Races 18 and 19, with Winterbottom launching from 15th and 13th for each race.

In Race 18, Pye pitted on Lap 20 and rejoined the field in tenth after the pit stop cycle. He carved his way past Waters, Fullwood and De Pasquale before passing Brodie Kostecki for sixth place with five laps to go to score his best result of the season so far.

Winterbottom got off the line well before he copped a hit at the first corner and dropped back to 18th by the end of the first lap. He showed strong speed to rejoin the field in 12th after his pit stop and then worked his way past Fullwood and Waters to score a tenth-place finish.

Race 19 got off to a clean start before Pye suffered a broken anti-roll bar during the first stint. A safety car was called on Lap 18, as both team cars dived into the lane for their compulsory stop.

Pye pitted again for the team to check the damaged roll-bar, before he was sent back out on the lead lap to salvage a 18th place finish.

The race resumed with 15 laps to go, as Winterbottom charged his way forwards from 15th and passed six cars on his way to an eighth-place finish.

Following the Townsville SuperSprint event, Winterbottom has moved back into sixth position in the Drivers Championship on 1138 points, while Pye has climbed two spots back to 13th on 934 points. In the teams battle, Team 18 has jumped back up to fifth on 1953 points.

The next event of the 2021 Repco Supercars Championship is set to be held at Queensland Raceway, with Supercars confirming talks are underway to hold an event at the South-East Queensland circuit on August 21-22. A confirmation is expected later this week.

Qualifying (Race 18): 11th (1:13.7643)
Qualifying (Race 19): 15th (1:13.2985)
Race 18: 6th (fastest lap: 1:14.6886)
Race 19: 15th (fastest lap: 1:15.0926)

“I’m really disappointed after the last race. We had a front anti-roll bar break early in the race which was a real shame,” said Pye.

“We probably had our best car all weekend, so we were carving through the field and then ‘snap’, the front roll-bar broke, but we hung in there as best we could.

“We were able to stay with the field pretty much until our tyres started to fade and then after the pit stop we tried to fix it and that put ourselves to the rear of the field.

“We were hoping it had just disconnected but it actually snapped, so that put us out of the race, but we still finished down in 19th.

“It was a great result that went missing today, but we did get sixth in the first race. To get sixth today after seventh yesterday shows great progress and we would have had another top five or six result if we didn’t have that mechanical failure.

“The boys have done an amazing job to give me a rocket of a car after what has been a pretty tough last few events.”
